So much so, that individuals with vitamin D deficiency were 80 percent more likely to get COVID-19.

The researchers’ meta-analysis of controlled trials also showed that people who improved their vitamin D levels reduced their risk of both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. This led them to conclude that vitamin D may reduce the risk of infectious diseases because it helps to regulate both innate and acquired immunity. It’s possible that using vitamin D for covid treatment could work because it prevents the heightened inflammatory response known as a cytokine storm and the resulting acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Does Vitamin D Prevent COVID? What We Know So Far

While there seems to be an association between low vitamin D and COVID, it’s much too early to say whether increasing your vitamin D intake can prevent you from contracting the disease.
