How Burdock became known as "The Root of Renewal".
In the heart of plague-stricken Norwich (1349), a humble herbalist named Edith Mowbray toiled day and night to find a remedy. Her husband had perished to the plague, and her only son was coughing blood. With few remedies and fear choking the streets, most turned to prayer or fled the city. But Edith turned to the plants.
Edith’s mother had taught her the ways of the wild herbs: comfrey for bones, yarrow for bleeding—and burdock root for "renewal." Her mother had said, "Burdock pulls the poison from the blood".
Desperate, she dug the thick, gnarled roots of burdock from the edge of the marsh, boiled them down, and gently fed the elixir into her son's mouth, day after day.
Miraculously, her son began to recover. His fever broke, and the boils under his arms shrank. Word of the “root of renewal” spread. People came from all corners of the town begging for Edith's burdock elixir. She gave it freely.
